Hawthorne & Heaney for Kent and Curwen A/W 2017

March 3, 2017 by Hasina Akther

It’s exciting to announce that Hawthorne & Heaney have worked with Kent and Curwen to produce beautiful embroidered badges for their new collection.

Kent & Curwen, was first established in 1926, ‘two years after Eric Kent and Dorothy Curwen first crossed paths on Savile Row’. The company was described as a sports related gentlemen’s fashion brand that first began as a manufacturer of military, club, and college repp ties. In 1972, K&C had a defining moment when they produced kits for both England and Australia in the Ashes. The relationship with The England team lasted for well over ’20 years, supplying knits and caps well into the Nineties’.

As of recent, David Beckham has joined Kent and Curwen in a partnership, acting as a brand ambassador and to us he is the perfect fit – ‘a true gentleman, celebrated for his fashion style and the British sports hero of his generation’.

Working with creative director Daniel Kearns, they have both created a collection ‘of everything a man would want to wear right now’. From ‘sun-faded rugby shirts, classic outerwear to English heritage knits.’ Most of these products bears a badge that reflects the heritage of Kent & Curwen – the Three Lions and the English Rose. These embroidered badges are both long held symbols of the brand and we at Hawthorne & Heaney are delighted at the way they turned out!

Kent & Curwen launched this collection as part of London Fashion Week Mens and in an interview with WWD, Kearns expressed that this collection aims to appeal to a new British generation. The collection is now on selling on the Kent & Curwen’s website and Mr Porter so check it out to get your hands on it.

Kent and Curwen are seriously embarking on a new chapter in their rich history and we are so excited to be part of that.

Hawthorne & Heaney for A V Robertson

Hawthorne & Heaney for A V Robertson London Hand Embroidery

If you follow our Instagram, then  you may have seen our post earlier in the week about the Fashion East show which we were delighted to have played a part in.  The mancunian designer, A V Robertson who specialises in embellished womenswear created a collection of elegant looks with an abundance of 3D leaves and hand embroidered elements. We were responsible for creating the leaves and petals that grow out of the garments, each of which was individually hand made.

The process started with making hundreds of meters bias binding which would seal and finish each of the pieces. As you can see Amie from A V Robertson had chosen a very exciting colour palette to work with, so there were many combinations to choose from.

After pressing all the binding into shape, it was then applied to the center fabric that made up the body of the leaves.

Hawthorne & Heaney for A V Robertson London Hand EmbroideryWith 8 colours of binding, 13 fabric insides and 8 leaf shapes, there were hundreds of potential combinations.

Then it was over to Amie to put her creations all together, if you would like to see the whole collection, click here for the vogue website.

Hawthorne & Heaney on Joshua Kane SS17

August 4, 2016 by Natasha Searls-Punter

Hawthorne & Heaney on Joshua Kane SS17 London Hand EmbroideryOur regular readers will be familiar with the long standing creative relationship that Hawthorne & Heaney have with Joshua Kane and his SS17 collection was no exception. This season we produced a series of tie pin/brooch roses which embellished a large proportion of the collection.

Hawthorne & Heaney on Joshua Kane SS17 London Hand Embroidery The show itself was sharp but beautiful as is Kane’s house style with a sumptuous 3D fabric rose on the lapels. Hawthorne & Heaney on Joshua Kane SS17 London Hand Embroidery

The roses are available in Black Satin, Teal Velvet, Crushed Purple Velvet and Printed Black and White Silk. Below is a little taste of the looks from the runway. They lend themselves well to both embellishing a dinner jacket or adding a sartorial touch to a more casual suit jacket. Hawthorne & Heaney on Joshua Kane SS17 London Hand Embroidery

Along with being worn on clothing, Kane has also shared the roses styled with some of his other accessories: Hawthorne & Heaney on Joshua Kane SS17 London Hand Embroidery

Hawthorne & Heaney for Ong Oaj Pairam

February 24, 2016 by Natasha Searls-Punter

With London Fashion Week well and truely underway, we thought we would share with you a little piece of Hawthorne & Heaney embroidery that made its way onto the catwalk. We worked with the Brighton based designer Ong Oaj Pairam on his AW2016 collection to produce a heavily encrusted, lace and crystal bodice.

It was a pretty quick turn around so we used all the tools at our disposal when we were developing the techniqies. The collection has a dark fairytale/ Victorian lost love theme which we worked into the designs. Using our CAD embroidery machine we developed lace like flower and leaf designs to build up a heavy base and compliment the sheen of the duchess satin on which they would be placed.

Hawthorne & Heaney for Ong Oaj Pairam London Hand EmbroideryAlong side this we experiemented with a variety of different sequin techniques for creating floral effects

Once this was all decided on then all there was left to do was to get stitching

Hawthorne & Heaney for Ong Oaj Pairam London Hand Embroidery Hawthorne & Heaney for Ong Oaj Pairam London Hand Embroidery

We were really pleased with the effect, it felt very heavy to hold but wonderfully textured. When teamed with the jaquard trousers and sheer shirt from the rest of Pairam’s collection it really comes to life.

We hope you enjoy looking at this piece as much as we enjoyed working on it. Check in again with us to see what else we have been working on recently…

Hawthorne & Heaney for Clio Peppiatt at London Fashion Week

September 24, 2015 by Natasha Searls-Punter

Clio Peppiatt’s recent SS16 show at London Fashion Week in Soho entitled “Kiss the Future”, was a fun collection full of bright colours and texture. Featuring an array of embroidery and sequins, Clio’s collection was inspired by feminism; a topic continuously used to fuel her inspiration.

Youth culture, another reoccurring influence for Clio Peppiatt was dominant in the collection. With strong nods towards the future in outer space-inspired needlework, her aim to create unique and positive clothes that make women feel happy, bold and fearless was clear in her most current collection.

Hawthorne & Heaney were commissioned to make of a pair of Saturn planets for a baby-pink cord jacket. The badges were all hand stitched, with iridescent sequins used for the embellished centre of the planets, and a combination of satin stitch and gold work for the rings.

The embroidered badges turned out beautifully and looked stunning on the pink jacket, the piece that truly represented the collection title, “Kiss the Future”.

JAMES LONG

February 22, 2012 by Claire Sarah Barrett

JAMES LONG London Hand Embroidery

For their last (certainly not least) offering for LFW AW12/13 the designers at Hawthorne & Heaney had the pleasure of working with James Long.

One jacket topped with cornely chain stitch and military plate came out mid show giving us a taster of the finale which was a fully embroidered jacket covered in military plate, cloth of gold and solid gold smooth and rough purl.

The effect was incredible and H&H were privileged to work with a designer with the skill to use such ancient, intricate techniques with such a successful, modern application.

PPQ AW 12/13

February 18, 2012 by Claire Sarah Barrett

PPQ AW 12/13 London Hand Embroidery

For their first show of the season Hawthorne & Heaney had the pleasure of working with Amy Molyneaux and the design team at PPQ.  Working within one of their oldest specialties they produced antiqued military gold work Ps & Qs for the conceptual leopard print designed for PPQs ‘new, more sophisticated look’.    The embroidery technique beautifully complimented Molyneaux’s inspiration for the collection of ‘the apocalyptic romance of winter’ adding more to the story written by their most recent collection “Black Out”.
Hawthorne & Heaney’s favourites included the gold work embroidered shoes and the Bram Stoker esque hood embellished with antique military gold work and Swarovki rondels.
