Hawthorne & Heaney for The Deck

October 4, 2021 by Natasha Searls-Punter

Events are back!

Hawthorne & Heaney for The Deck London Hand Embroidery

We were delighted to be kicking off the Autumn season with an event for The Deck, who like us live on Savile Row. They were celebrating the launch of their new collection of 4 must have shirts, created with legendary shirt makers; Turnbull and Asser.

Hawthorne & Heaney for The Deck London Hand Embroidery We were there on the night as a live activation where the customers could have their shirt monogrammed while they waited with their initials for that extra touch.

Hawthorne & Heaney for The Deck London Hand EmbroideryAs you can see from our behind the threads position, it drew quite the crowd but that comes as no surprise when the shirts are so beautiful.

Hawthorne & Heaney at the Savile Row: Theatre of Craft Marketplace

May 18, 2021 by Natasha Searls-Punter

Hawthorne & Heaney at the Savile Row: Theatre of Craft Marketplace London Hand Embroidery

To mark lockdown easing, last month saw a Marketplace pop up in the area usually used as a cafe in the Service, Savile Row. Reinventing the space whilst we still were not able to have indoor seating, the ‘Theatre of Craft’ was organised by The Pollen Estate and Alpha Kilo to bring together crafts people from the world of bespoke tailoring. We were delighted to be involved in the creative space where we could display some of our wares along with the likes of fabric merchants ‘Dugdale Bros and Co’, Dry cleaning and pressing extraordinaires ‘Savile Row Valet’ to name a few.

For our section we had live embroidery going on in the form of both hand and machine, here Victoria is demonstraing a hand embroidery kit from our sister company ‘London Embroidery School’ whilst the machine is running off a sample for interiors.

We also had a little display of our London Embroidery School kits amongst some of our favourite bespoke embroidery samples like these velvet pieces.

And of course we had a gold rail, because if you have the choice to have a gold rail or not to have a gold rail… you have the gold rail right?! You can also just see some of the beautiful silk hankies by Millie Bridget Henry and Ready to wear garments from Cad and the Dandy.

Always wonderful to be a part of such a creative community, especially in such an inspiring and historic area of London. If you would like to get us in for your own instore personalisation event, we are now taking bookings for the festive season 2021 so get in touch info@embroidery.london

Or if you want to do something a little more low key, why not try one of our London Embroidery School online classes and kits for yourself. Techniques and levels to suit you whatever stage you are at of your stitching journey.

2020 has been a wierd year, for the past few years we have got into a rhythm that by the time about October comes, we will be doing a lot of monogramming and personalisation events. However this year, that didnt happen.

We could not just sit idly by though and not have an event, so we created one for ourselves. Along with a whole host of fabulous creators, we joined togather in the Service on Savile Row to create The Marketplace.

Sadly with the rerestricting of London going into tier 4, the marketplace is now closedbut we had great (safe) fun whilst we could- which feels like the whole of 2020 summed up dont you think?

Hawthorne & Heaney on Savile Row: Our New Showroom

Hawthorne & Heaney on Savile Row: Our New Showroom London Hand Embroidery

From 19/10/2020 the Hawthorne & Heaney team will be residents in The Service, a new lifestyle destination comprising a coffee shop, exhibition, retail and showroom space, now open at 32 Savile Row.

Hawthorne & Heaney are an embroidery firm who have a rich history of working on bespoke projects with Savile Row tailors alongside contracts for the Royal Household, Military, Film, Art, Theatre, PR and many other high profile private clients.

Although modern times and rising rents have seen the character of its future threatened, local landlords The Pollen Estate are seeing the value in ‘The Row’ as a character destination and are supporting innovative new and heritage brands to secure a position in this venerable location. The Hawthorne & Heaney front of house team will be offering bespoke embroidery services, on site, 10-4pm Monday – Friday by appointment and will be continuing large scale and confidential works in their new additional South London location.

“We are looking forward to contributing to the long standing tradition of hand made craft on The Row and we are excited about being in the midst of some of our most important clients again. This is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with our roots and contribute to the community that was the biggest supporter in our early years.” says Claire Blok, the company founder. “The opportunity could not be missed, with a need for more space in these challenging times we are over the moon with the support we have received from the team behind The Service, Dugdale Bros. and the Pollen Estate in making our new showroom possible.”

There is also the exciting addition of a same day monogram service for the run up to Christmas, making ‘bespoke on The Row’ more accessible than ever.

Hawthorne & Heaney on Frogging

October 18, 2019 by Natasha Searls-Punter

Frogging is an interesting word for an embroidery technique isn’t it. It is believed that it referes to the shape of the knot used in ‘frog fasteners’ with the center being the body and the sides being the wide back legs of the frog. The term over the years has come to refer to the embroidery done with this same type of appliqued chord onto garments though not resctricted to the original 3 part knot or for fastening purposes.

Hawthorne & Heaney on Frogging London Hand Embroidery

At Hawthorne & Heaney, we can produce traditional, hand embroidered frogging, where braid is manipulated and sewn down to create these elaborate patterns that you may recognise from historical garments and costume.

Hawthorne & Heaney for Anderson & Sheppard’s London Craft Week Beaumont Collection Collaboration

May 4, 2017 by Natasha Searls-Punter

Along side our own London Craft Week Classes, Hawthorne & Heaney also have some embroidery on display in the shape of a navy smoking jacket we embroidered for Anderson & Sheppard. They are part of a collaboration with Jeremy King OBE of the Beaumont Hotel London to create a capsule collection inspired by the hotel:

‘Each tailor has produced an outfit for Jimmy Beaumont, a fictional character invented by Jeremy to inform the interior design of the 1926 hotel building. The collection includes a tuxedo, a three piece suit and night-wear, highlighting the skill of the tailors alongside their ability to respond to their client’s character. Each piece of Jimmy Beaumont’s wardrobe is displayed in the tailors windows along Savile Row. ‘ (London Craft Week)

Here are some of the photos of the jacket in the various stages of production, whilst the pieces were still flat they were provided to us to create the frogging on the front and motifs on the sleeves which are inspired by the symbols on playing cards:

Hawthorne & Heaney Celebrates Kathryn Sargent’s New Savile Row Store

April 8, 2016 by Natasha Searls-Punter

Wednesday this week, friend and client of Hawthorne & Heaney, Kathryn Sargent opened her new seasonal premises on London’s prestigious tailoring location, Savile Row.  This makes Sargent the first female Master Tailor on the Row in its 213 year history.

37 Savile Row was a flurry of activity as reporters gathered for an interview with the lady of the hour herself. The press coverage has been quite extensive with reports from the BBC, International Business Times and the Telegraph to name but a few.

Here is what they had to say about the opening from their press release: ‘This spring Kathryn Sargent returns home to Savile Row to take up residence on the street that made her who she is today. A beautiful spring/summer boutique that will offer the same high quality service and unique tailoring as our flagship atelier on Brook St, 37 Savile Row will be a revelation to your season.‘

This amazing bespoke beaded stag was from a recent project we did with Kathryn for a ladies jacket where a pair of these embroideries featured on the sleeves of the piece.  Kathryn also has Hawthorne & Heaney hand embroider a bespoke label for each of her bespoke suits made for clients, a beautiful finishing touch that sums up her outstanding ethos of attention to detail and excellent customer service.

Hawthorne & Heaney at the Gieves and Hawkes Archives

May 18, 2015 by Natasha Searls-Punter

Hawthorne & Heaney at the Gieves and Hawkes Archives London Hand EmbroideryWe were lucky enough to be asked to go on a tour of the new refurbished No. 1 Savile Row, Gieves and Hawkes Historical Archive so we thought we would take the opportunity to share the pictures of some of the treasures they have there. Their long history of 450 years has allowed them to accumulate this amazing collection of pieces. The building itself is also very striking as the former home of Lord Fairfax, the Duke of Devonshire and then the Royal Geographic Society. Part of their renovations was to bring the splendid Map room a the heart of the building, originally installed by the Royal Geographic Society, back to its former glory. It is through the impressive balcony in the Map room that the archive is accessed.
